This is a quote by Rosa Luxemburg, a revolutionary woman of Polish decent who fought for the philosophy of Marxism and was one of the founding members of the KPD party (the communist party in Germany which lasted until 1956). Rosa was murdered in 1919
Plan and Elevation of Old St. Peter’s Basilica, 4th cent, Constantinian/Imperial Christian, Rome (Vatican City).
THE BASILICA PLAN!
The burial spot of St. Peter- who was martyred in Rome during the 1st century.
Pope Julius II tore this building down 1,200 years later during the Renaissance. He built St. Peter’s Basilica that we see and know of today. He tore it down and build a new one, on the same site. What a dick.
Believed to have had very rich art with luxurious mosaics, perhaps? We have no idea thanks to Pope Julius II.
The double aisles of 22 columns were spolia from ancient buildings (again, Constantine showing that Christianity > Pagans)
The use of the transept gives the basilica the shape of a Latin cross. This space was also used to separate the main area of the nave from the apse, giving room for the many people who traveled to visit the church.
This plan set the path for pretty much every other basilica at this time. It was “trendy”. Every church wanted to be like Old St. Peters.
